Bali’s Miracle in the Mist: Handara Golf & Resort at 50

High in the volcanic heart of Bali, the island’s oldest course is celebrating its Golden Jubilee. Here is why the legendary, co-designed by an Australian icon, demands a return pilgrimage in 2026.

There is a specific moment on the drive from Denpasar when you realise you have left the Bali of tourist brochures behind. Somewhere past the ninety-minute mark, the humidity breaks. The dense urban sprawl gives way to terraced rice paddies clinging to impossibly steep ravines, and the air rushing in through the car window turns crisp, cool, and scented with clove and pine.

You have arrived in Bedugul, the caldera region, which towers 1,142 meters above sea level. Sitting inside the crater of an extinct volcano lies a sleeping giant that is fully awakening for its milestone year: Handara Golf & Resort.

For decades, Handara was spoken about among Australian golfers as the "must-play" curiosity—a course so improbable in its setting, so breathtaking in its vistas, that it seemed untethered from the tropical island below. Established in 1974 and fully operational by 1976, the resort officially celebrates its 50th Golden Jubilee this year. It is not just celebrating survival; it is celebrating a renaissance that restores its position as one of Asia’s most unique golfing experiences.

The Audacity of History

To understand Handara today, you must appreciate the sheer audacity of its creation. Building a world-class golf course inside a volcanic crater in the undeveloped highlands of 70s Indonesia was considered madness. Yet, the visionaries persevered.

Crucially for Australian golfers, the layout holds a sacred lineage. It was co-designed by Ronald Fream and the five-time Open Champion, Australia’s own Peter Thomson. Thomson saw the potential in the rich volcanic soil, the natural amphitheatre of the crater walls, and the cool highland climate that allowed bentgrass greens to thrive just degrees from the equator.

For years, Handara was ranked among the top 50 courses in the world. It was the playground of statesmen and touring pros, a place where the silence was profound, broken only by the strike of a ball and the call of mountain birds.

A Culinary Renaissance: From Farm to Fireplace

The resort’s revitalization extends well beyond the fairways, with three distinct venues offering everything from farm-to-table freshness to old-world cigar-lounge charm.

Orient Nine Teahouse offers an elevated dining experience, specializing in Asian Fusion cuisine. It operates on a strict farm-to-table philosophy, using the incredible produce of the Bedugul region to create dishes that are as fresh as the mountain air.

For alfresco dining, Breeze Terrace serves up barbecue and local favorites with uninterrupted views of the crater rim.

Then there is Hiland 1280. Stepping inside feels like walking into a classic grand lodge—think soaring timber ceilings, stone fireplaces, and an atmosphere reminiscent of the cinematic "Overlook Hotel." It serves hearty Mediterranean cuisine and, with its moody, rustic-luxe aesthetic, is the ultimate spot to sink into a leather chair with a post-round cigar and a single malt.

The Wellness Upgrade: A Japanese Legacy

Perhaps the most significant restoration is the Ankala Wellness and Spa. This facility carries a unique history; the Japanese Onsen here was originally built by Kosaido, the Japanese management company that oversaw Handara in its early years.

Recently renovated, the Onsen preserves its original layout, allowing guests to experience the authentic, timeless tradition of Japanese bathing just as it was intended decades ago. Now complemented by a Sauna, the facility is the perfect antidote to a walking round. The spa also offers a specialized Golfer's Massage, specifically designed to release the hips and shoulders after 18 holes.

Sustainability: The "Eco-Golf" Initiative

In an era where "eco-friendly" is often just a marketing buzzword, Handara walks the walk. Recently honored as "Asia's Best Eco Facility", the resort has launched its "Eco-Golf" initiative.

"For us, this award is recognition of how we live and work in balance with the Bedugul environment," says General Manager Shan Ramdas. While motorized carts are available, the Eco-Golf program encourages players to use walking trolleys, reducing their carbon footprint and discovering that the real luxury is breathing the fresh mountain air.

Guests can also participate in the "Adopt a Tree" program, leaving a living legacy in the highlands—a poignant activity for families or repeat visitors.

The celebration of this milestone is not a single day, but a season. The resort has curated a structured calendar of events designed to showcase the course at its peak.
